Rubber tracks are key components for your equipment and need to be kept in top working condition. To help you get the most out of your tracked machines, we put together some tips and best practices to properly maintain your tracks and lengthen their lifespan.

Choose the right rubber tracks
It’s important to select the best rubber tracks for your equipment. You should consider your machine’s weight, the type of terrain it will be operating on, how often it will be operated, and what types of jobs you’ll be completing. If you need to purchase new tracks, our team can help you make the right choice for your specific machine.

Conduct regular inspections
Routinely checking for issues is a crucial part of heavy equipment maintenance and keeping your tracked machines in top condition. It’s important to look for cuts, cracks, tears, abnormal or uneven wear, and missing lugs or tread patterns before beginning each shift. If the operators notice any type of damage, they should not use the machine until it has been fixed or the rubber tracks have been replaced.

Keep the rubber tracks clean
Most of the time, tracked machines are working in the dirt and mud. For that reason, keeping them as clean as possible is key. The presence of excessive debris, mud, and dirt can accelerate track wear and potentially damage undercarriage components. Use a pressure washer or a hose to thoroughly clean the tracks, ensuring they are free from any abrasive materials.

Maintain optimal track tension
Proper tension is essential for the longevity of your rubber tracks and the overall performance of your tracked machines. Tracks that are either too loose or too tight can cause excessive wear and reduce track lifespan. Refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure the correct tension is maintained at all times. It’s important to always adjust the rubber track tension at your jobsite. Ground and temperature conditions can affect your tracks, so if you adjust in a shop, the tension there may not match what you need in the actual work area.

Watch your operating habits
The way you operate your tracked machines can significantly impact the lifespan of your rubber tracks. Avoid sudden, aggressive maneuvers, excessive spinning, or sudden stops. These actions can put undue stress on the tracks and lead to accelerated wear and tear. Additionally, we recommend avoiding high speed travel and reverse operation, which lead to increased wear.

Avoid parking in direct sunlight
The sun’s heat and UV rays can lead to cracks and weaken your rubber tracks. When parking or storing your tracked equipment, make sure you leave it indoors, in the shade, or cover up the tracks until you use the machine again.
